When a client comes to me with a cake smash idea I start by asking what does your baby love? Sometimes the child doesn’t have a particular interest, but sometimes they do. This little guy absolutely loves cocomelon!

This was a great opportunity to offer an alternative to cake by doing a Cocomelon watermelon smash instead. Most cake smash photographers will tell you that a lot of babies don’t like cake and it’s tough to get them to eat it. Offering another food option is often a great way to encourage baby to actually eat something.

When to schedule first birthday photographs for great results?

Start thinking about your baby’s first birthday session one to two months ahead of time. It’s important to give your photographer enough time to get you on the schedule and to plan for the session. If you have something particular in mind your photographer will need time to design it for you. If you want to share your baby’s first birthday pictures the day of their birthday you may also want to schedule the session at least a couple of weeks before their birthday. This way your pictures should be edited and delivered in time for the big day.

The day of your session consider a morning appointment. Most babies do best in the morning and not during nap times. Afternoons are typically when they are the most cranky. Not ideal timing for a photoshoot! Think about what time of day your baby is the happiest and try to schedule then.

What other things should you consider for your first birthday cake smash photography session?

  • Order a cute outfit a couple of weeks ahead of time.
  • Have a backup outfit just in case.
  • Bring favorite toys and snacks as distractions and rewards.
  • Leave other children at home if you can unless you have another adult there with you to help.
  • Bring a towel with you for the car ride home. Baby might be a mess!
