Maternity and Newborn Photography Sessions with the Same Family

A walk down memory lane! I first met these clients in 2017 when they were expecting their first child – a little girl. Mom had attended a charity auction that I donated a session to and she bid on it knowing she needed photography soon!
We met and hit it off right away and started preparing for their maternity portrait session.
Soon we had a sweet baby girl to photograph. I remember this baby because she was so easy to work with. Not all babies settle easily but this little girl did. The session was inspired by florals. We also created a fun themed Game of Thrones portrait. Grandma also came for the session and jumped into a couple of frames. Multi-generational newborn sessions are especially wonderful because you are telling the story of the family and that baby’s legacy. This is still one of my favorite newborn photography sessions!
For this maternity session mom wanted to involve older sister. She also wanted to honor the theme of a rainbow baby – a baby born after loss. So we incorporated these themes into the session along with some favorite colors. We chose dresses from our extensive studio wardrobe. The colors we chose for this family maternity photography session were lavender and purple, blue and teal, and gold. I especially love the coordinating blue colors we used for the family part of the session. I also loved the feminine colors of lavender and purple for mom and daughter. Their last portraits as just a family of three!
When my client and I spoke about what we would do for the newborn session we wanted to tie in the colors from the maternity session to create continuity. So we definitely had to use some of the same dresses to start. Big sister loved stepping back into her princess dress and mom looked lovely in the same gown she wore for her maternity portraits.
For baby brother’s solo pictures I used a lot of blues and also made sure to incorporate the rainbow theme again. Creams were used for neutral tones with big sister and grandma. All in all the portraits flowed from one session to the other and the resulting album will be a thing of beauty.
Of course baby brother took after his sister and was a dream to work with. He modeled like a pro!
It is a tremendous honor and compliment when I have repeat photography clients. Not only is it a way to say they are happy with my work, but I also feel like we have an opportunity to create something really special. As I get to know my clients over time I have the chance to learn their preferences. I feel like I can create a visual story of their lives that connects with who they are because we have a history together. I follow my clients along as their families grow and change. I love that they trust me to tell their story and participate in their lives as a meaningful contributor.

This family – and these photos – are gorgeous! It’s such a good reminder to capture smaller milestones as well as the big ones. Having the same photographer is such a good idea. All of their photos along the way will have a similar style and feel, which will make for beautiful memory books!

It must be really special to see a family grow through your photography!
I just checked out your article on MODL Photography about repeat photography clients, and I couldn’t agree more with your sentiment! Your analogy of repeat clients being like extended family is both heartwarming and insightful. Building strong relationships with clients not only fosters loyalty but also creates a sense of trust and mutual respect. Your dedication to providing exceptional service and capturing meaningful moments shines through in your words. It’s evident that you value the connections you’ve formed with your clients beyond just the business transaction. By treating them as part of your extended family, you’re fostering long-term partnerships that benefit both parties. Keep up the fantastic work of cherishing and nurturing these valuable relationships! 📸👨👩👦👦✨
What a beautiful journey shown through photography! I love how it captures the different milestones. Definitely worth every penny!
These are so beautiful. What a miraculous thing to be able to follow a family like this.

These stunning photos of this beautiful family serve as a wonderful reminder to capture both the small and significant milestones, showcasing a consistent style and feel that adds a personal and enchanting touch to each cherished memory.
These are amazing photos! I love the settings, the outfits, and the color schemes. All so well done — what a great thing to have as a family.
It’s heartwarming to see this family’s journey unfold through your lens, Laura! From their maternity session to welcoming their first baby girl and now expecting a baby boy, each milestone beautifully captured. The theme of a rainbow baby adds an extra layer of significance to the portraits. Can’t wait to see the album showcasing their story!
I love this. We had a photographer we started using when my son was born. When he turned 4 the photographer moved out of state. I was so disappointed. My son had built an amazing relationship with him.
The fact that the family chose you to capture their special moments and milestones right from the time they started their journey together, shows how deeply they value your work. Beautiful photography and great relations. Congratulations!
What a great service you provide families going through their milestones. Must be so much fun getting to meet new people while enjoying your talent!
These photos are incredible!! It’s amazing that you’ve been able to work with the same family for so long – capturing all of their milestones! There’s definitely mutual benefits that come from working with repeat clients!
These are beautiful photographs! I love the maternity photos – I wish I thought to have pictures done when I was pregnant.
That’s such a cute idea! It’s a beautiful family, and you took great pictures. We have our 10th wedding anniversary next summer, and I would like to do a family photoshoot at the same location to see the difference.
